Job Summary

As a key member of the City of Elkhart's Permit Center, the Senior Planner will ensure compliance with the City Zoning Ordinance and perform other professional planning duties. This role has a significant impact on decisions and recommendations of the Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Historic Commission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Issue zoning clearances and sign and building permits.
  • Review proposed site plans and changes in land use upon request.
  • Provide professional staff support to the Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
  • Serve as principal staff to the Historic and Cultural Commission.
  • Make decisions regarding the selection of appropriate standards or ordinances.
  • Answer questions pertaining to zoning and other planning issues.
  • Provide zoning verifications.
Requirements
  • Professional knowledge of zoning regulations and land use planning principles.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
