Job Summary

The Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority seeks a skilled Counselor to create a rehabilitative environment for inmates at the Haysi Jail Facility. This position involves developing and implementing programs to maximize inmate abilities, providing leadership and organization of new and current programs, and evaluating inmate progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement programs to enhance inmate rehabilitation
  • Provide leadership and organization of new and current programs
  • Evaluate inmate progress through classroom observation, testing, and case file documentation
  • Provide individual and classroom counseling and/or crisis intervention counseling as needed
  • Assist inmates with community resource linkage and may interview and classify inmates during initial intake screening
Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Services, or a related field, and two years of work experience in individual and group interaction. Detention or security facility setting experience is helpful. Effective verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required. Spanish-speaking abilities are a plus. Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Corrections Standards for Local Jails and Lockups is beneficial.

May be required to complete and pass law enforcement training.
