Overview

Axient is in search of a dedicated professional with expertise in Flight Safety Analysis to contribute to our operations.

This role is situated within the Safety & Mission Assurance Office, focusing on both suborbital and orbital aerospace flight vehicles, particularly emphasizing Sub-Orbital launch systems. The responsibilities encompass the coordination, monitoring, and application of technological processes to support safety evaluations for aerospace and aeronautical initiatives from inception through to launch and operational phases.

As the primary contractor for the Safety and Mission Services (SMAS II) contract, Axient plays a crucial role in supporting NASA's science and exploration missions, including significant projects like the Roman Space Telescope (RST) and the Dragonfly probe. Our team is also responsible for providing flight safety analysis and operational oversight for various NASA/Wallops projects.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying flight hazards and implementing controls to mitigate risks during aerospace vehicle tests or operations.
  • Conducting risk assessments and developing flight safety plans that outline safety parameters, risk factors, and operational guidelines for missions.
  • Evaluating mission objectives to ensure adherence to Agency and GSFC/WFF Range Flight Safety standards while advising stakeholders on associated risks.
  • Tailoring analytical methods to meet the specific demands of various assignments.
  • Collaborating with senior analysts to perform conceptual studies and detailed analyses to establish preliminary designs for innovative systems on new projects.
  • Executing theoretical and aerodynamic evaluations to assess factors affecting flight safety, including performance and trajectory analysis.
  • Calculating safety limits for orbital guided launch vehicles and analyzing post-flight data to identify any deviations from expected performance.
  • Conducting Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Compiling comprehensive technical briefings and reports for review panels and senior management to ensure mission risks are clearly communicated.

Providing expert advice on flight systems safety both internally and externally, participating in working groups, review panels, and failure investigation boards as necessary.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of experience in risk analysis for Sub-Orbital and Orbital vehicles.
  • Strong oral communication and technical writing abilities are essential.
  • Proficiency in software development and programming.
  • Familiarity with Trajectory Analysis Optimization Software (TAOS) and MATLAB.
  • Experience with Range Safety Risk Analysis Tools such as RRAT, JARSS, and other relevant software for flight risk assessment.
  • Solid mathematical skills.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain a security clearance.
  • Seeking candidates with robust software coding experience and exceptional communication skills.

  • Capable of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and kneeling. Some light physical activity may be necessary.
