Position Overview:


Deliver expert nursing care to patients throughout their life stages, encompassing medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, and obstetric disciplines.


Key Responsibilities:


Essential functions include administering healthcare services to individuals qualified for assistance as per the self-governance agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States, under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.


Implement the nursing process to:

Evaluate patients' clinical states, recognizing and interpreting critical situations, prioritizing actions, and making immediate decisions, such as notifying physicians and executing pre-established protocols.

Develop nursing diagnoses to effectively care for patients of all ages, including those in medical, surgical, psychiatric, and obstetric settings.

Create individualized care plans by engaging with patients and their families, analyzing health records, and identifying necessary health and physical care, including discharge strategies.

The care plan should address any unique cultural, religious, physical, and psychosocial requirements identified, with expected outcomes tailored to the patient or situation.

Initiate emergency measures when a physician is unavailable, such as performing resuscitation in cases of cardiac or respiratory failure.

Operate and oversee general and specialized emergency medical equipment, including infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, ventilators, cardiac monitors, and other specialized devices.

Administer prescribed therapeutic interventions, including medications and IV therapy that impact hemodynamic status, respiratory therapy, and mechanical ventilation.

Plan, deliver, and accurately document patient and family education in preventive, curative, and rehabilitative practices, considering their learning needs, styles, barriers, and readiness.

Record observations, nursing actions, therapeutic measures taken, and the status of collaborative efforts among nursing and other professional disciplines.

Assess progress towards achieving outcomes, including patient status, interventions, and responses to nursing and therapeutic actions, and revise the care plan as necessary.

Document specific healthcare needs for patients and prepare written assignments for team members, aligning staff skills with patient care requirements.

Coordinate care delivery and implementation of the care plan, ensuring proper documentation. Supervise patient care provided by licensed practical nurses and unlicensed personnel in assigned or delegated tasks. Provide technical guidance, delegation, and direction to other registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and unlicensed personnel.

Share responsibilities for maintaining adequate supplies and equipment, ensuring the unit's upkeep, and preserving a safe environment.

Maintain knowledge and skills that reflect current nursing practices and foster professional development for oneself and colleagues.

Exhibit positive role modeling and leadership attributes. Uphold and advocate for professional, ethical, and legal nursing standards.

Foster positive personal work habits, interpersonal skills, and public relations with colleagues, administration, medical staff, patients, and families.

Contribute to the achievement of facility and agency initiatives through diligent performance of assigned responsibilities in support of the Cherokee Nation mission.

Provide Human Resources with copies of all licenses, certifications, and renewals upon receipt. Additional duties may be assigned.

SPECIFIC TO SURGICAL SERVICES:
Availability for on-call duties on a rotating schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT


Associate's degree from a two-year college or technical institution; or two years (60 credit hours) of coursework from a four-year college or university; or three years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
No additional experience required.

COMPUTER SKILLS


To excel in this role, an individual should be proficient with Human Resource systems, internet software, order processing systems, and payroll systems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS


Must hold a Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) or possess a multistate RN license recognized by the OBN, with no substitutions. License must be maintained throughout employment. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required and must be maintained throughout employment. If not certified at the time of employment, BLS certification can be obtained during orientation. Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is also required and must be maintained throughout employment. If not certified, ACLS certification must be obtained within six months of hire. All departments, except the Obstetrical Department, must be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and maintain certification throughout employment. If not certified, PALS certification must be obtained within six months of hire. For the Obstetrical Department, certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is required and can be obtained during orientation. Certification in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is also required and must be maintained throughout employment. If not certified, NIHSS must be obtained within six months of hire. A valid driver's license may be required for some departments.

If applicable, the applicant/employee must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history that meets the Cherokee Nation underwriting criteria.


DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
(If not certified at the date of hire, must be obtained within six months and maintained throughout employment unless otherwise specified).

Obstetrical Department:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – within orientation period

Basic/Advanced Fetal Monitoring and Interpretation – within 12 months of hire

Perinatal Education Program (PCEP)

RECOMMENDED:
Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood

Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support (STABLE)

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS


The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care. Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations and maintains strict confidentiality of patient information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.

The employee is frequently required to taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
