Job Description
Under supervision, provides professional nursing care to patients/clients within an assigned unit. Diagnoses and treats responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case-finding, health teaching, health counseling, and the provision of care supportive to and restorative of life and well-being.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care utilizing the nursing process.
- Formulates and implements comprehensive and nursing care plans. Sets priorities, delivers, and directs care to meet resident needs.
- Evaluates residents' responses and makes appropriate changes on the care plan, on an ongoing basis. Maintains accurate documentation as described in policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team in the care of residents, including the resident, family, and/or significant other's. Discuss education and discharge planning issues as they arise.
- Transcribes physician's orders and administers medication/treatment as defined in all policies.
- Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.
- Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences. Attends all mandatory classes and participates in the orientation/training staff.
- Demonstrates safety awareness and follows protocols for fire, disaster, infection control, and other safety practices.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and other committees as assigned.
- Performs other related duties.
- Supervises and directs Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Surgical Technician, Certified Nurse's Aide, or other allied nursing personnel concerning the care of residents.
For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license before July 1, 2020, in New York State, another state, or United States territory:
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Nursing, or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in 'a' above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure; and - Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals healthcare setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Staff Nurses holding a limited permit and Staff Nurses awaiting their limited permit to practice nursing, will be paid $60 annually below the rate paid of a NYS licensed Staff Nurse pending receipt of a NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
