Job Summary

The Genomics Technologist plays a vital role in the DFCI Molecular Biology Core Facilities, performing Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) sample quality control, library preparation, and sequencing analysis. This position requires adherence to applicable regulations and standards established by DFCI and EH&S, as well as operation, calibration, and maintenance of NGS instruments and related equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain genomics instrumentation, including data acquisition for patient and research samples, calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare and maintain genomics-related reagents, data analysis, documentation, and maintenance of test results according to lab procedures.
  • Perform tests using SOP involving multiple methodologies, including automated, semi-automated, or manual technologies.
  • Prepare internal control and benchmarking standards, archive and retrieve samples for long-term storage and additional testing.
  • Detect, troubleshoot, and correct instrument, reagent, and system failures, perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instrumentation.
  • Evaluate/troubleshoot problems related to product analysis and preparation, communicate outcomes to appropriate supervisor and/or investigator.
  • Perform quality control duties, participate in validation of new instruments and methods, and examine existing processes and problems for continuous improvement.
Requirements
  • Minimum Education: BS/BA in a Biological Science, Medical Technology, or related field required.
  • Minimum Experience: 0 years of experience required, some experience in a molecular biology research laboratory setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of operation and performance of basic lab equipment, lab safety, infection control, and understanding of lab policies and procedures.
  • Good judgment, attention to detail, problem-solving, analytical, and reasoning skills with ability to perform complex mathematical calculations using scientific notation.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of analytical techniques and instrumentation, adapt to changing technology, and develop proficiency in good sterile technique.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate with staff, management, and physicians.
