Overview of Role
Under the guidance of the Monona Parks & Recreation leadership team, the Youth Sports Activity Coordinator plays a crucial role in designing and executing dynamic programs for children participating in various recreational activities. Our initiatives cater primarily to youth from PreK to 5th grade, with some offerings extending to preschoolers (ages 2-3) and older students in grades 6-10.
The coordinator will oversee and facilitate a diverse range of activities, including soccer, flag football, basketball, volleyball, dance, and tennis. While specific expertise in each sport is not mandatory, a general ability to instruct various recreational pursuits is essential. Comprehensive training will be provided.
This position is seasonal, with opportunities available during four distinct periods:
- June-August
- August-October
- November-February
- March-May
The compensation structure ranges from $15 to $20 per hour, determined by experience, education, and qualifications.
Compensation Guidelines:
Entry Level - $15
General Experience - $16
Relevant Degree/Experience - $18
Advanced Degree/Experience - $20 (+)
Compensation reflects the skills, experience, and education necessary for the role. A $0.25 increase in pay is available annually or per season.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, demonstrate, and instruct participants in recreational games and activities.
- Foster an interactive, positive, and safe environment while effectively delivering lesson plans.
- Assist in developing program curricula and lesson outlines.
- Maintain accurate records, including incident reports and participant attendance.
- Address questions and concerns from parents and participants, escalating issues to supervisors as needed.
- Ensure clear communication between supervisors, participants, and parents.
- Report any equipment, facility, or participant concerns to supervisors.
- Prepare and manage program supplies and assist with facility setup and cleanup.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 15 years old and eligible to work in the United States.
- A high school diploma and a valid driver's license are preferred but not required.
- At least 1 year of experience working with youth or adults in a recreational or childcare setting is preferred.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR is required; these can be obtained during training.
- Additional certifications (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor) are advantageous.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations and provide First Aid.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the capacity to follow oral and written instructions, including health and safety protocols.
- Must pass a background check if over 18 and provide necessary documentation.
- Ability to travel within Monona for program activities.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends, while demonstrating punctuality and reliability.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
