Job Summary:

As an Emergency Department Technician at UPMC, you will play a vital role in providing direct patient care and supporting the clinical team in a fast-paced environment. Your attention to detail, strong communication skills, and ability to work effectively in a team will make you an asset to our team.

Responsibilities:

• Respond effectively in emergencies and assist RN/physician in the admission of patients

• Orient patients to their surroundings, transfer patients, and assist in discharging

• Utilize restraints and protective mechanisms as needed with documentation

• Assist with treatment as directed, including foley cath, cath irrigations, and care, oral tracheal/nasal suctioning, enemas, dressing changes, perineal care, etc.

• Perform venipuncture and intravenous access

• Perform and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure, and pulse oximetry)

• Adhere to universal precautions and comply with established occupational exposure policies

• Participate in patient care conferences providing input in patient care planning, patient/family teaching, and CPI processes

• Observe, report, and document all unusual symptoms, condition changes, and care delivered as to DEM policy

• Assist patients in bed, turning, lifting, positioning, and ambulating

• Maintain cubicle and equipment in an orderly fashion, cleans, restocks, and orders as necessary. Maintains instruments and trays

• Complete ongoing age-specific and annual competency validation via defined mechanisms

• Maintain proficiency/competency in patient care testing as defined in the evaluation criteria established by the lab

• Call for patients in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort; adhere to instructions from the Clinical Manager or physician and established routines

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED required

• Successful completion of Licensed Practical Nurse course; Medical Assistant; Surgical Technician or Paramedic Program

• Basic knowledge regarding the care of patients and the operation of monitors

• Certification in BLS according to the level of training required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

• Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting

• Act 33 with renewal

• Act 34 with renewal

• Act 73 FBI Clearance
