Key Responsibilities
The Wildland Firefighter at this level serves as a seasoned leader within a wildland fire crew or module, responsible for overseeing and executing various fire management operations, including fire preparedness, fuels management, prevention, and suppression activities. This role may also encompass emergency response duties. Fire crews may consist of Hand Crews, Engine Crews, and Helitack Crews, with specialized functions including aviation operations, fire engine management, and fire prevention strategies.
As a leader, you will direct helicopter crew activities, which include preparing cargo loads, briefing passengers, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols during helicopter operations. You will also engage in mission planning with pilots, assess environmental conditions, and communicate effectively with ground teams during aerial missions.
Employment Conditions
- U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
- Appointment is contingent upon a successful background investigation.
- Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
- Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program is necessary.
- A negative drug test result is required prior to appointment, with random testing throughout employment.
- A valid driver's license is essential, and a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record must be submitted.
- Travel by fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft may be required.
- Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is expected, with an allowance provided.
- Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is necessary.
- New employees may be subject to a one-year probationary period.
- Frequent extended travel, potentially up to 14 nights per month, particularly during peak fire season, is expected.
- Physical fitness must be verified by an authorized government physician, and periodic medical evaluations will be conducted.
- Successful completion of the Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) is required, which involves a three-mile hike with a 45-pound pack within 45 minutes.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be fulfilled by the closing date of this announcement. Credit will be granted for all relevant experience. To qualify, your resume must clearly outline your duties, responsibilities, and employment dates.
This position is categorized as a key fire management role under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard, requiring the selectee to meet minimum qualification standards prior to placement.
Selective Factors: Applicants must possess the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications:
- Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5) (CURRENCY REQUIRED)
- Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) (CURRENCY REQUIRED)
- Helicopter Crew Member (HECM) (CURRENCY REQUIRED)
- Portable Pumps and Water Use (S-211) (CURRENCY REQUIRED)
- NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Chainsaw Operations (S-212) (CURRENCY REQUIRED)
This position is subject to special retirement provisions, requiring applicants to be at least 18 years old but not older than 37 by the closing date. Exceptions apply for prior Federal service or qualified veterans.
Experience and Education Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate specialized experience or education relevant to the position. Volunteer experience will also be considered.
Education: Transcripts must be submitted if education is used to qualify for the position.
