Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief of Optometry to join our team at the Veterans Health Administration. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for providing clinical services, consultation, and guidance to all areas of the service unit, including outpatient, inpatient, and emergency room.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage a team of optometrists, ophthalmologists, health technicians, and other staff members.
  • Develop, coordinate, and evaluate a comprehensive eye care program for the facility.
  • Ensure coordination and referral of care for patients with complex eye disease requiring specialized services.
  • Participate in peer review and quality improvement activities to ensure quality of patient care consistent with VA regulations and Joint Commission standards.
  • Member of several standing committees, including Medical Records Committee, Operating Room Committee, Facility Surgical Workgroup, and Surgical Service Morbidity and Mortality Committee.
  • Provide comprehensive eye care services, including examination of the human eye to diagnose and treat abnormal conditions, prescribing lenses and devices, and educating patients and staff on ocular anomalies and disease.
  • Participate in the clinical supervision of optometry residents and student externs, and function as a coordinator between other attending physicians and team members.
Requirements
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Two years of optometric practice or its equivalent, or one year of approved residency training or its creditable equivalent acceptable to the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish professional working relationships with other clinicians and staff.
