Position Overview

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Chief Optometrist. This position is pivotal in delivering comprehensive clinical services and providing expert consultation across various service areas, including outpatient and emergency care.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief Optometrist will:
  • Supervise a team of optometrists, ophthalmologists, health technicians, and support staff.
  • Conduct evaluations of service proficiency and competency through direct observation and chart assessments.
  • Engage in peer review and quality improvement initiatives to uphold high standards of patient care in alignment with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in essential committees, contributing to the operational and clinical governance of the facility.
  • Deliver comprehensive eye care services, including emergency management and follow-up care for existing conditions.
  • Perform diagnostic examinations and prescribe corrective lenses and other necessary devices.
  • Educate patients and staff on ocular health and disease prevention.
  • Oversee the clinical training of optometry residents and externs, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Coordinate with various medical services to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Develop and implement educational programs focused on evidence-based practices for patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with established standards for clinic access and consult triage.
  • Be accountable for the performance and professional development of all team members.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position with a standard work schedule.

Qualifications
