TBD. The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a distinguished urban educational institution serving around 22,000 students, with over 60 languages represented in our community.

With a diverse array of educational facilities including Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest school district in Kansas, with a student demographic comprising approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian.

To support our students, the district employs around 4,000 staff members, including over 1,800 educators.

JOB OBJECTIVE:
The role of Custodian is designed to deliver cleaning services at designated locations; ensuring a welcoming, hygienic, and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors; executing various specialized cleaning tasks; and aiding in the preparation of facilities for educational activities and community events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Assists with snow removal on sidewalks, loading docks, and the immediate perimeter of buildings to ensure accessibility and safety.

Provides information and guidance to students and other personnel regarding activities, safety concerns, and proper facility maintenance.

Monitors student and staff activities in work areas (e.g., assists with vehicle loading/unloading, oversees restroom, grounds, hall, and lunchroom activities) to prevent injuries and maintain safety.
Conducts building maintenance tasks (e.g., waxing/buffing/vacuuming floors as necessary, disposing of trash, setting up bleachers, sanitizing areas post-accidents, changing filters and lights, mowing sports fields, maintaining high school pools, and checking chemical levels in chillers and boilers) to facilitate summer construction projects.
Prepares facilities for daily operations (e.g., during school hours and after-school events) to ensure they are functional and free of hazards.

Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and visitors to provide information, take appropriate actions, or direct them to the right personnel for resolution.

Addresses immediate safety and operational issues (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) by taking necessary actions or notifying the appropriate personnel.
Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., opening doors in the morning, locking down doors after entry, monitoring metal detectors at high school and middle school, documenting and conducting fire drills) to minimize property damage, loss of equipment, and potential liabilities, while ensuring the safety of staff and students.
Assists other maintenance staff (e.g., grounds, trades) to complete custodial tasks.
Participates in unit meetings, training sessions, workshops, etc., to gather information necessary for job performance.

Performs additional related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the work unit.

Ability to understand written procedures, compose routine documents, and communicate clearly; analyze situations to identify issues and draw conclusions.

Specific knowledge-based competencies required for satisfactory job performance include:
industrial cleaning methods; safety practices and procedures; and chemical knowledge.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Job-related experience is preferred.

EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.

COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION:
Maintains communication with school personnel and district staff.
Effectively utilizes existing technology in the performance of duties.
Performs other related work as required.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to manage multiple tasks with a potential need to enhance skills to adapt to changing job conditions.

Flexibility is essential for collaboration with others; adhering to defined processes; and operating equipment using various standardized methods.

Ability is also required to engage with a diverse range of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize various job-related equipment.

Problem-solving with data necessitates following established guidelines; problem-solving with equipment is generally limited to moderate.

LANGUAGE SKILLS are necessary to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to enhance skills to adapt to changing job conditions.

Specific skill-based competencies required for satisfactory job performance include:

operating equipment used in industrial maintenance, including electrical cleaning tools, common tools, etc.; adhering to safety practices; and effective communication with colleagues, students, staff, and visitors.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic mathematics, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; comprehend written procedures, write routine documents, and communicate clearly; and analyze situations to identify issues and draw conclusions.

Specific knowledge-based competencies required for satisfactory job performance include:
industrial cleaning methods; safety practices and procedures; and chemical knowledge.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The usual and customary methods of performing job functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

Regularly handles loads weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally handles loads weighing up to 100 pounds or more. Generally, the job requires 0% sitting, 50% walking, and 50% standing.

The job is performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with some exposure to the risk of injury and/or illness.
