Job Title: Director of Finance/Controller

George Washington's Mount Vernon is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Finance/Controller to join our team. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for directing all day-to-day accounting and finance operations of the Association.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Staff management and development, process improvement, internal and external financial reporting, and compliance
  • Ensuring the system of internal controls is sufficient to safeguard the Association's assets
  • Management and leadership, including overseeing the day-to-day operations of the accounting and finance staff
  • Providing leadership to departments by establishing oneself as a well-respected and reliable consultant concerning financial matters
  • Work closely with department heads to understand department goals, financial needs, and reporting needs
  • Primary contact with independent auditors, commercial banking relationships, casualty/liability insurance broker, credit card companies, etc.
  • Safeguarding assets and assuring accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing an efficient system of internal controls
  • Managing the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day activities, including accounts payable, cash disbursements, invoicing/billing, customer credits and collections, payroll, inventory, fixed assets, general accounting, and cost accounting
  • Reviewing bank reconciliations and general ledger reconciliations on a monthly basis
  • Establishing best practices and continuously considering ways to innovate in a complex environment
  • Overseeing integration of sub-systems into the general ledger
  • Maintaining a systematic chart of accounts
  • Maintaining an orderly accounting filing system
  • Ensuring liabilities are paid in a timely and accurate manner
  • Ensuring accounts receivable and pledges receivable are collected promptly
  • Ensuring payroll is processed in a timely and accurate manner
  • Issuing timely and accurate monthly reports to management and the Board of Regents
  • Preparing monthly reporting package for CFO review
  • Coordinating the preparation of the financial section of the Association's annual report
  • Preparing and/or reviewing audit work-papers prior to the start of the annual independent audit of the Association's financial statements
  • Preparing draft of annual audited financial statements and footnotes
  • Recommending benchmarks against which to measure the performance of Association operations
  • Managing the annual budget process
  • Providing management with financial reports and analyses as needed
  • Maintaining a documented accounting policies and procedures manual and regularly updating to ensure best practices are implemented and maintained at all levels
  • Coordinating the annual audits of the Association's financial statements and retirement plans with independent auditors
  • Monitoring compliance with debt covenants
  • Preparing draft of IRS Form 990 and 990-T and VA Form 500
  • Preparing or reviewing all business licensing, personal property tax, and other government tax filings and compliance filings
  • Maintaining PCI compliance
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience at a not-for-profit organization or medium/large corporation
  • 5+ years supervisory experience
  • Certified Public Accountants and Certified Management Accountants preferred
  • Public accounting experience a plus
  • Intermediate to advanced accounting software expertise a must
  • Advanced experience with one or more of the following systems Dynamics GP, Tessitura, CounterPoint, Squirrel
