Job Title: Principal Motor Control Engineer

At Techtronic Industries North America, Inc., we're committed to innovation and excellence in our products and services. We're seeking a highly skilled Principal Motor Control Engineer to join our team.

About the Role

The Principal Motor Control Engineer will play a key role in designing, modeling, simulating, and implementing innovative control algorithms for our products. You'll collaborate with various engineering teams to deliver the next breakthroughs in battery systems and power tool technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, modeling, simulation, and implementation of advanced control algorithms.
  • Develop, analyze, maintain, and document control system architecture.
  • Use modeling tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow.
  • Collaborate with Hardware and Firmware Engineers to optimize and implement next-generation control algorithms.
  • Peer review software and controls designs/source code.
  • Innovate control solutions to meet the needs of the business.
  • Use laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, and HIL test equipment to validate control algorithms.
  • Track projects to ensure adherence to schedule and company processes.
  • Schedule, develop agendas for, facilitate, and document technical meetings and formal presentations.
  • Develop and apply a manufacturing mindset to designs to effectively and efficiently mass produce power tools.
  • Acquire knowledge and maintain an understanding of company development and manufacturing processes.
Requirements
  • Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in the field of model-based control development utilizing design tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • 10+ years of Matlab/Simulink model-based design code generation and automated testing.
  • Extensive knowledge of closed loop control theory, vector control, and pulse width modulation techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of control loop tuning and stability analysis.
  • Ability to read power electronics schematics and component data sheets.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, exercises independent judgement, and works well under pressure in a dynamic environment.
  • Self-motivated, organized, efficient, process-oriented with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time (domestic and international).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing plant models to simulate physical systems.
  • Experience with single-phase and/or three-phase power applications.
  • Experience with single-phase and/or three-phase motor control applications.
  • Knowledge of Advanced control systems, Model Predictive Control.
  • Experience with auto code generation.
  • Working knowledge of battery, drive, and motor systems.
  • Experience leading technical teams.
