Overview
The Chief Information Security Officer is an integral part of the Office of Information Technology Leadership team, collaborating closely with colleagues to design and execute a robust information security strategy. This role encompasses the establishment of security policies, processes, and standards that align with organizational objectives. The incumbent will partner with the IT department to identify and implement technical controls that satisfy specific security mandates, ensuring that security configurations are consistently upheld.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with various operational units and risk management functions to ascertain security needs through methods such as risk assessments and business impact analyses.
- Facilitate the creation and maintenance of documentation related to information security operations.
- Work alongside IT leadership to formulate strategies and plans that enforce security requirements and mitigate identified risks.
- Report to management regarding residual risks, vulnerabilities, and other security concerns, including misuse of information assets and noncompliance issues.
- Serve as an advisor in infrastructure, educational technology, and application development projects to evaluate security needs and controls, ensuring proper implementation.
- Engage in critical projects to address security considerations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Collaborate with the infrastructure team to identify, select, and deploy technical security measures.
- Develop and refine security processes and procedures, supporting service-level agreements (SLAs) to ensure effective management of security controls.
- Provide guidance to security administrators regarding standard and exception-based processing of security authorization requests.
- Research, assess, and recommend information security-related hardware and software, including crafting business cases for security investments.
- Establish security configuration and operational standards for security systems and applications, including compliance tools and network security devices.
- Develop and validate baseline security configurations for operating systems, applications, and networking equipment.
- Offer second- and third-level support and analysis during and post-security incidents.
- Assist security administrators and IT personnel in resolving reported security incidents.
- Participate in security investigations and compliance audits as required.
- Act as a liaison between incident response teams and subject matter experts.
- Monitor security logs and reports for unusual activities.
- Manage relationships with audit teams, addressing findings and coordinating remediation plans with responsible parties.
- Operate within the information security governance framework to propose efficient and effective control recommendations.
- Oversee and manage the remediation of audit findings, tracking progress and providing updates to the compliance team.
- Support e-discovery processes, including the identification, collection, preservation, and processing of relevant data.
- Stay informed about existing and emerging security standards, legislation, and regulations affecting information security, recommending necessary policy adjustments.
- Contribute to the development of security architecture and policies, principles, and standards.
- Engage in the enterprise architecture community, providing strategic input during the EA process.
- Research, evaluate, design, test, and plan the implementation of new or updated information security technologies; assess new threats and security alerts, recommending appropriate actions.
- Provide guidance for security activities throughout the system development life cycle (SDLC) and application development initiatives.
- Participate in organizational projects as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related IT field; or a High School Diploma/GED with 8+ years of relevant experience in Information Technology may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Certification/Licensure
- Certification from ISACA (CSIM, CRISC, or CGEIT) or (ISC)2 (CISSP) is required.
- Microsoft and Network certifications are preferred.
Experience Qualifications
- A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in Information Technology, including at least 3 years in information security; experience in an educational setting is preferred; audit, compliance, or governance experience is advantageous.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate security requirements and relate them to appropriate controls.
- Comprehensive understanding of information risk concepts and principles, linking business needs to security measures; familiarity with risk assessment methodologies and technologies.
- Ability to interact effectively with personnel at all levels across various business units, comprehending business imperatives.
- Experience in developing and documenting security architecture and plans, including strategic, tactical, and project plans; demonstrated knowledge of common information security management frameworks such as ITIL and COBIT 5.
- Strong leadership capabilities, able to lead at any level with minimal supervision.
- Understanding of project management fundamentals, including the creation and management of project plans, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient vendor management skills.
- Strong customer/client focus, capable of managing expectations and providing a superior experience while building long-term relationships.
- Proficiency in conducting risk, business impact, control, and vulnerability assessments.
- Strong understanding of business applications, including ERP and financial systems.
- Extensive technical knowledge of mainstream operating systems (Windows/Linux) and a variety of security technologies, such as network security appliances, IAM systems, anti-malware solutions, automated policy compliance, and desktop security tools.
- Experience in developing, documenting, and maintaining security policies, processes, procedures, and standards.
- Knowledge of network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and associated protocols and concepts.
