Job Description

This is a full-time position in Grayslake Internal Medicine with scheduled hours ranging from 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday.

The Triage Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adhering to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complying with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Establish positive first impressions with patients and customers, acting as a patient advocate.
  • Triage all incoming telephone calls and electronic messages, prioritizing and resolving, involving the provider as necessary, and successfully completing the communication cycle.
  • Document all communications in the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule patients for visits with providers when telephone assessments indicate this.
  • Assist in obtaining appointments for patients with specialists within Northwestern Medicine.
  • Coordinate emergency and hospital transfers, including paperwork and telephone communications.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with Nursing Standards and as ordered by the provider.
  • Provide education to patients and staff concerning clinical issues.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring activities of clinical staff to ensure adequate coverage and adherence to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
  • Assist in orienting new staff members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include:
    • Assisting in specific process improvement projects.
    • Administering intravenous and injectable medications to adult, geriatric, and wheelchair-bound patients, demonstrating competency for age-related responsibilities.
    • Maintaining quality control during all aspects of patient care, ensuring that all exam rooms and equipment are maintained according to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
    • Participating in departmental quality improvement activities.
  • For Triage Nurses in the Immediate Care Clinics (ICC), float to other ICCs/departments.
  • Room patients and provide direct patient care under the supervision of a provider, recording medical, surgical, and family histories, medications, and vital signs, preparing patients for office procedures, and assisting medical staff with routine examinations and patient treatments.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients, reinforcing patient education regarding medication and special diets or testing provided by the provider.
  • Administer injections and medications as directed by the physician.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, including venipuncture, urine dips, finger sticks, strep screens, flu screens, pregnancy tests, and cultures, independently performing other tests and/or office procedures such as EKGs, pulmonary testing, and chronic disease management testing.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited RN program.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient setting.
  • Registered Nurse License issued by the State of Illinois.
  • CPR certification.
