The Department of Campus Recreation at Penn State University is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Swim Instructor to join our team. As a Swim Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching group and private swim lessons to participants of various ages, experiences, and abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruct group and private swim lessons to participants of various ages, experiences, and abilities.
  • Meet the outlined goals and objectives of the swim program.
  • Demonstrate confidence and knowledge of American Red Cross Parent-Child, Preschool, Learn to Swim, and Adult levels or other certifying agencies standards.
  • Ensure the safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate.
  • Respectfully manage disagreements and model positive rapport with patrons.
  • Arrive on time for all assigned shifts or secure appropriate coverage.
  • Remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations.
  • Maintain regular and frequent communication with supervisory team.
  • Interact with diverse groups through various situations.
  • Use independent judgment and have a strong sense of integrity.

Requirements:

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Basic Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Completion of Penn State University Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • Both criminal and FBI background checks.

Work Schedule:

Swim Instructors can work a maximum of 24 hours (International Students 20 hours) per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks for Penn State University.

Work will take place on the University Park Campus White Building or McCoy Natatorium (indoor or outdoor). Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that will include mornings, evening, weekends; some holiday hours are required.

Campus Security Crime Statistics:

Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
