Job Summary

As a WIC Nutritionist at Oswego County Opportunities, you will play a vital role in determining nutrition risk eligibility, prescribing and tailoring the WIC food package, and providing nutrition education for the county-wide WIC Program. You will act as a resource for WIC Staff and provide consultation as needed, ensuring all duties are carried out in accordance with Federal, State, Agency, and WIC program policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments, determine nutrition risk, and enroll participants.
  • Prescribe, tailor, authorize, issue, and reissue food packages, including those requiring medical documentation.
  • Review and approve formula requests requiring medical documentation for participants in consultation with the Health Care Provider (HCP).
  • Provide and document participant-centered nutrition education, including individual and family sessions or facilitated group discussions.
  • Identify the need for individual care plans and refer to the Qualified Nutritionist as appropriate.
  • Carry out high-risk care plans established by the Qualified Nutritionist and provide participant-centered counseling for high-risk participants.
  • Conduct breastfeeding assessments and provide participant-centered counseling to help mothers initiate breastfeeding, establish a milk supply, and continue breastfeeding.
  • Address common breastfeeding concerns and issues related to breast pumps.
  • Refer prenatal and postpartum clients to peer counselors and other breastfeeding support resources.
  • Assist CPAs in planning and evaluating participant-centered nutrition education.
  • Develop, conduct, and evaluate nutrition training for LA staff in nutrition education topics.
  • Orient, train, and mentor new nutrition support staff.
  • Conduct and oversee all duties of a Nutrition Assistant to enhance program services to participants.
Requirements
  • Familiarity with nutrition education and county health resources as they relate to special populations.
  • Critical thinking skills and understanding of fiscal and nutritional risks involved with the over-issuance of food packages.
  • Ability to assess nutritional needs and risks beyond a standard food package and make appropriate adjustments/substitutions.
  • Skilled in participant-centered nutrition counseling to produce behavioral change.
  • Professionalism, good judgment, flexibility, courtesy, and integrity.
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
  • Motivation, ability to relate to clients in a caring and sensitive manner, be a positive role model, and work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to attend trainings, in-services, and seminars for skill maintenance and enhancement.
  • Valid New York State Driver's License with a good driving record and access to a reliable, properly insured vehicle for travel throughout the county and occasionally outside the county.
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities such as keyboarding regularly and lifting 25-50 pounds 5-10% of the time.
  • Ability to attend to detail and accuracy and work well in a stressful environment.
  • Flexibility and ability to work hours of operation as established to meet State, program, and participant needs, including some evenings and Saturdays.
Qualifications
  • Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (NDTR/DTR); or
  • Bachelor's in an appropriate health-related field with at least six credit hours in nutrition; or
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with Bachelor's degree;
