RN Behavioral Health Nurse Specialist

Job Summary:
The Behavioral Health Nurse will provide professional nursing care to emotionally disturbed and/or mentally ill patients in a 50-bed Behavioral Health Hospital Unit. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in psychiatric nursing and be able to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and develop treatment plans.
Key Responsibilities:- Assume professional responsibility and accountability for a group of residents/patients, including medication administration, teaching, and supervision of nursing staff.
- Conduct intake assessments, perform ongoing and systematic assessments, and develop comprehensive goal-directed interdisciplinary plans.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with residents/patients, families, colleagues, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure treatment is appropriate for the patient's needs.
- Administer and note reactions to psychotropic drugs and other medications, and arrange further medical attention when necessary.
- Assist patients in understanding the nature of emotional disturbances and accepting the need for treatment.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and patients, and test for vital signs of pain and ensure treatments of pain.
- Document all patient information on medical charts and follow physician's written orders, maintaining patient confidentiality and accurate records.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with a BSN preferred.
- Minimum one year clinical experience, preferably in an acute and/or Behavioral Health capacity.
- Current RN or LPN license in the State of Connecticut, in good standing.
- Knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients.
- Ability to apply professional nursing care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of geropsychiatric patients.
- Develop interpersonal therapeutic relationships with psychiatric patients, and keep accurate written charts and records of patient activities and progress.
