Culinary Educator for Youth

The Greater Austin YMCA is seeking a dedicated and creative Culinary Educator for Youth to lead engaging cooking classes for children ages 4-12. This role involves planning and delivering age-appropriate cooking lessons, fostering a positive atmosphere, and ensuring that each child has a hands-on, enjoyable experience.
Key Responsibilities:- Cooking Class Development: Plan and conduct cooking classes that teach fundamental cooking techniques, food safety, and healthy eating habits to equip children with essential life skills.
- Lesson Planning and Preparation: Develop and prepare age-appropriate lesson plans and recipes that are both fun and educational, ensuring all activities captivate children's interest and promote their culinary skills and knowledge.
- Classroom Management: Create a positive and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels encouraged and supported, effectively managing classroom behavior to maintain a conducive learning space.
- Kitchen Safety and Hygiene: Ensure a safe and hygienic cooking environment by implementing rigorous food safety protocols and educating children on kitchen safety, proper handwashing, and cleanliness to foster lifelong healthy habits.
- Communication and Collaboration: Maintain open and effective communication with parents and guardians, keeping families informed about class schedules, student progress, and any updates to foster trust and engagement in the children's culinary journey.
- Age and Experience: Minimum of 18 years old, with previous experience teaching or working with children in a recreational or educational setting preferred.
- Cooking and Culinary Skills: Strong knowledge of basic cooking techniques and food safety practices, with creativity, patience, and a genuine enthusiasm for cooking and working with children.
- Communication and Organizational Skills: Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to engage and motivate young learners.
- Competitive Salary: $45,000 - $55,000 per year, depending on experience.

The Culinary Educator for Youth position at the Greater Austin YMCA involves working in a kitchen and classroom environment, including preparing ingredients, cooking on stovetops and ovens, and cleaning up after classes. Shifts may include afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays to accommodate class schedules.
Physical Requirements:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle or feel cooking equipment and ingredients. They must be able to lift and/or move items such as pots, pans, and boxes of ingredients weighing up to 25 pounds.
