About the Role

The Center for Elders' Independence is seeking a skilled and compassionate Personal Care Attendant I to join our team. As a Personal Care Attendant I, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care and support to our elderly participants, enabling them to live safely and independently in their communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Personal Care and Support: Provide assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Independent Activities of Daily Living (IADL) to support participants, including toileting, showers, bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding/assisted dining, meal service, laundry, transfers, and ambulation.
  • Transfer and Mobility Support: Complete safe transfers utilizing Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as required, including lifts, gait belts, and hoyer lifts.
  • Environmental Support: Clean the bathroom used by the participant, including emptying and cleaning the commode.
  • Communication and Reminders: Provide appointment reminder communications to participants.
  • Housekeeping and Maintenance: Responsible for keeping the center or home in a clean and orderly condition, including kitchen and activity areas, sanitizing showers/bathrooms, and relevant DME.
  • Transportation Support: Escort participants to CEI vans, if needed.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Document participant services provided in electronic health records accurately and on time.
  • Participant Advocacy: Act as a participant advocate by reporting any violations of the Participant Bill of Rights & Responsibilities.
  • Complaint Resolution: Respond to participant complaints in a timely manner and understand the basic procedures for receiving and documenting complaints or requests.
  • Condition Reporting: Promptly report changes in participant's condition to supervisor or designee.
  • Dependability and Professionalism: Demonstrate dependability by arriving consistently and on time to scheduled work hours and submitting timely and accurate timesheets.
  • Customer Service: Maintain a courteous, helpful, and professional attitude on the job.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Display a willingness and ability to be responsive to all customer groups, including team members, participants, and their families.
  • Training and Certification: Comply with all agency training requirements.
  • Professional Development: Maintain professional affiliations and any required certifications.
  • Safety and Quality: Provide a safe environment for participants and self by displaying awareness of safety hazards and reporting and/or reversing hazards.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in Quality Improvement programs as required.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Follow all OSHA safety guidelines and CEI Policies and Procedures.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain the confidentiality of all participant information according to HIPAA requirements.
Department-Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesDay Center:
  • Service Documentation: Records services in required logs or electronic health records.
  • Activity Support: Assists with individual and group activities as necessary.
  • Transportation Support: Accompanies participants to outside medical appointments.
  • Wander Risk Management: Responsible for ensuring that all wander risk participants are wearing code alert devices.
  • Culinary Support: Obtains and maintains food handlers certification.
  • Food Service Support: Assists with food service program, including serving snacks and meals at the day center, checking food temperatures, reviewing diet orders.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Performs kitchen duties, including washing dishes, sanitizing work areas, maintaining supply inventory, and checking for food expiration dates.
Home Care:
  • Vital Signs Monitoring: Completes vital signs monitoring.
  • Medication Support: Provides medication prompts, which may include supervision and double-checking of participant self-administration of insulin.
  • Personal Care and Hygiene: Empties and cleans foley catheters, ostomies, and urostomies.
  • Personal Grooming: Dresses and grooms the participant in preparation for day or night, including providing shaving, oral and skin care, monitoring skin condition, positioning, and turning of the participant.
  • Exercise Support: Assists participants in completing home exercise programs as required.
  • Culinary Support: Plans and prepares light meals, followed by clean-up, properly storing and organizing delivered meals, and monitoring food expiration dates.
  • Housekeeping and Laundry: Performs light housekeeping, including dusting, vacuuming, taking out garbage and recyclables.
  • Laundry Services: Performs laundry services, including washing and folding laundry, straightening/making beds, and changing linens as needed.
  • Service Plan Implementation: Follows the home care service plan to complete tasks.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Driver's License and Vehicle: A valid California driver's license, current vehicle insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle are required if working in the Home Care Department.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification: Current Basic Life Support CPR card and First Aid Card are required.
  • Language and Computer Skills: Proficient in oral and written English is required. Basic proficiency in computer skills is required.
  • Experience and Skills: Minimum 1 (one) year of experience working with frail, low-income elderly is preferred. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary team is required.
  • Language and Cultural Competence: Bilingual is preferred but not required.
