Position Overview
Employment Type: Temporary Exempt Category 16: This role is not subject to the competitive Civil Service examination process and is appointed at the discretion of the relevant authority.
Part-Time During School Year: The School Crossing Guard is required to work both morning and afternoon shifts, totaling approximately two and a half hours daily. Shifts typically occur between 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, five days a week. The specific timing and duration of shifts may vary based on the assigned educational institution.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the School Crossing Guard Program staff, the individual in this role will assist elementary and middle school students, as well as other pedestrians, in safely navigating streets and boulevards during school hours.
Essential Duties Include:
- Directing students and pedestrians at intersections, ensuring they only cross when it is safe.
- Managing traffic at designated crossings using mechanical or hand signals to facilitate safe passage for students and pedestrians.
- When necessary, accompanying students through intersections and providing guidance on safety practices.
- Monitoring and reporting any traffic concerns or unusual incidents that may affect pedestrian safety.
- Notifying school authorities of any students who do not comply with safety instructions.
- Engaging with students, parents, faculty, and the general public to promote safety awareness.
- Staying vigilant and aware of surrounding traffic conditions.
- Taking immediate action to avoid potential hazards for both pedestrians and themselves.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
This position requires good physical fitness, including adequate vision and hearing, as well as the ability to stand and walk for extended periods in various weather conditions. Responsibilities include lifting and carrying a handheld stop sign and wearing appropriate uniforms.

Minimum Requirements:
A combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills for the role.
Knowledge Required: Familiarity with traffic laws, particularly those related to pedestrian rights and safety.
Skills Required: Ability to maintain respect and compliance among students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Residency near the assigned school.
- Demonstrated reliability and commitment to safety in previous work experience.
- Experience working with children or in customer service roles.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
- Strong observational skills.
