Job Summary

The University of California, Santa Cruz is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Boating Director to oversee all aspects of the Boating program. This includes Physical Education programming, Boating Lessons, Boating Club Membership, and assisting with the Sailing Sport Club. The successful candidate will ensure the safe usage of vessels and uphold all current health and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of the Boating program, including Physical Education programming, Boating Lessons, and Boating Club Membership.
  • Assist with the Sailing Sport Club and ensure the safe usage of vessels.
  • Uphold all current health and safety standards.
  • Teach sailing classes to youths of junior to high school age and adults as part of the Boating Program's community sailing program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on the needs, maintenance, and growth of the overall Boating program.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Demonstrated advanced leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to incorporate key program information for inclusion in web-based and other marketing materials.
  • Advanced proficiency in the use of computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • General knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn and apply, campus or higher education policies and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of program activity and best practices.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Skills in program management.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
  • Experience teaching beginning through advanced sailing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • US Coast Guard Captain's license.
Special Conditions of Employment
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess US Sailing Certificate Instruction.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Ability to tow trailers for inspection as needed.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, including evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • Ability to travel nationally.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
