Position Overview
A Surgical Technician, commonly referred to as a scrub tech, plays a vital role within a surgical team, contributing significantly in both Operating Rooms and Labor and Delivery units. Surgical Technicians are responsible for essential tasks that support surgeons during procedures, including:
- Preparing the surgical environment and ensuring all necessary instruments are sterile and ready for use.
- Passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during operations.
- Managing and containing surgical tissues and materials.
- Assisting in maintaining a safe and efficient surgical setting.
Work Environment: Surgical Technicians typically operate in hospital settings or outpatient clinics, where they collaborate closely with medical professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a high school diploma is required to pursue a career as a Surgical Technician.
- Optional certification can be obtained to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), which involves passing an examination through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NBSTSA).
Specialized Skills: Proficiency in various surgical disciplines is advantageous, including Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, and Thoracic Surgery.
