Community College Police Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Community College Police Officer to join our team at Santa Monica College. As a Community College Police Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, and staff on our campus.
Key Responsibilities- Patrol the campus on foot, bicycle, or by vehicle to prevent and respond to incidents
- Enforce laws, traffic regulations, and safety regulations to protect college property and facilities
- Provide security control for large gatherings, assemblies, and other campus activities
- Investigate and record irregularities, take necessary action, and correct situations as needed
- Gather evidence to use in the apprehension and conviction of suspects
- Rend first aid during emergencies
- Detect traffic law violations and issue parking infraction citations
- Prevent traffic congestion with signs or traffic direction
- Conduct building searches in accordance with predetermined plans during bomb threats or other emergency conditions
- Maintain a log of daily activities and write reports for follow-up investigations
- Perform additional law enforcement duties in accordance with POST training
- Participate in ongoing training related to community policing, anti-bias, cultural responsibility, conflict avoidance, and de-escalation
- High school diploma, GED certificate, or high school proficiency examination, or a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved college/university, as specified by POST
- Successful graduation from a basic law enforcement training academy at a POST certified academy
- Completion of a California POST approved academy
- For lateral entry: Possession of a POST Basic Certificate and one year of experience working as a sworn police officer
- Must be free of any felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving violence and meet all minimum selection standards of a peace officer as specified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law
- Must pass a thorough background investigation, in accordance with POST and District Standards
- Meet the District and POST medical and psychological standards for police officers, including hearing and vision requirements
- Must pass a 12-month probationary period in this position
- Variable Schedule and Shift Differential Stipend - 5% to 10%
- Uniform Maintenance Allowance - $75 per month
- Firearm Maintenance Allowance - $50 per month
- Handgun Proficiency Allowance - $50 per month
- Educational stipend earned during employment - 8% maximum
- Special Skills Differential pay - 7.5% maximum
- 13 paid holidays plus 40 hours of floating holidays
- 12 paid vacation days
- 12 paid illness days
- Fully paid medical, dental, and vision-care coverage (including eligible dependents)
- Free mental health support through the Employee Assistance Service for Education (EASE) program
- 5% increase in base pay for every 5 years worked with SMC, up to 40 years of service
- Bilingual Pay Differential - $35 to $45 per month
