InsideHigherEd is in search of a dedicated Senior Network Engineer to architect, execute, and sustain our expanding hardware and software network systems. You will play a crucial role within our IT department, tasked with designing and developing scalable, maintainable, and highly available network infrastructures that align with business goals and service level agreements. We are transitioning to a next-generation network architecture that promises enhanced capacity and resilience. This is a rare chance to construct a new network from the ground up, working alongside a collaborative team that values continuous learning and strong partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Network Engineer will oversee all IT networks facilitating internal and external communications. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and upgrading existing network architectures.
  • Maintaining computer networks, hardware, software, and related systems.
  • Facilitating remote user access to system resources.
  • Ensuring timely delivery of critical data.
  • Replacing faulty network hardware components as necessary.

Core Duties

60% Network Engineering Support:

  • Provide design support in areas such as dynamic routing and enhancing core network resiliency, utilizing BGP and other dynamic routing protocols, spanning tree, MLAG, QoS, and related technologies.
  • Assist with PPPL projects and initiatives requiring network engineering input, including experiments, construction projects, and software upgrades.
  • Support outage resolution and failures as needed.
  • Facilitate remote user access to computing resources.
  • Ensure critical data delivery through quality of service.
  • Troubleshoot wired and wireless network issues using available tools.

10% Remote Access VPN Management:

  • Support necessary patching, system upgrades, and architectural modifications.
  • Provide second-level support for user issues.
  • Add new features based on user requests and security needs.
  • Conduct periodic testing for high availability and performance.

10% VoIP Telecommunications Support:

  • Test call quality and configure quality of service.
  • Provide on-site and remote client support.
  • Troubleshoot server-related communication issues.

15% Technology Evaluation:

  • Conduct proof of concept testing and analysis, making recommendations in areas such as dynamic routing protocols and software upgrades.
  • Collaborate with team members on planning and integrating new designs.

5% Documentation Updates:

  • Maintain network diagrams, procedures, and FAQs.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in a computer-related field or equivalent training and experience.
  • Demonstrable hands-on network engineering experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Five to ten years of experience in a Network Engineer or related IT support role.
  • Familiarity with wireless standards, protocols, and specialized technologies.
  • Experience with routing/switching technologies, VoIP, VPN, and data management.
  • Hands-on experience with BGP configuration preferred.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • CCNP or equivalent knowledge required with current CCNA.
