Key Characteristics of the Position
This position entails executing advanced mechanical tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of substantial and specialized machinery in water and sewer pumping facilities.
The responsibilities include ensuring the functionality of various pumps, motors, and associated equipment in water and sewer systems. The role demands expertise in mechanical and plumbing trades, along with a foundational understanding of electrical repair work.
Additionally, the position requires availability for standby and emergency call-backs. The employee will face risks associated with wastewater management and mechanical operations, which may involve working in diverse environments, including extreme weather conditions, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving parts, electrical currents, and chemical substances. The use of protective gear, including respirators, may be necessary.
Working with raw sewage is subject to compliance with OSHA standards regarding bloodborne pathogens. The employee will work under regular supervision, with performance evaluated based on the effectiveness of restoring equipment to operational status within designated timelines and the overall efficiency of system performance.
Core Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Conduct maintenance and repairs on pumps, motors, hydraulic systems, and other equipment.
- Plan and engage in routine preventive maintenance inspections, including lubrication of bearings, gearboxes, filter replacements, and cleaning of wet wells.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment failures and perform necessary repairs.
- Dismantle and overhaul various machinery; clean, replace, and repair gauges and engines.
- Rebuild and service defective machinery and instruments; maintain electrical generators for emergency operations.
- Participate in grounds and facility maintenance, including painting and roof repairs.
- Keep detailed logs and records of inspections and maintenance activities; input data into computerized systems.
- Assist in video inspections of sewer lines.
- Operate specialized equipment for sewer line maintenance.
- Utilize machinery for mowing and maintaining sewer easements.
Additional Responsibilities
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems in pumping stations.
- Awareness of occupational hazards and safety protocols associated with the work.
- Familiarity with tools, parts, and techniques related to diagnosing and maintaining equipment.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems and components.
- Ability to identify and replace malfunctioning parts.
- Proficiency in using and maintaining trade tools.
- Capability to interpret maps, plans, and schematic diagrams.
- Skill in detecting issues with pumps and motors through observation and sound.
- Ability to follow technical drawings and instructions.
- Capacity to foster effective working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
- Competence in maintaining accurate records and generating reports.
Physical Requirements
The role requires the ability to perform essential physical tasks, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and lifting. The employee must be capable of exerting significant force, occasionally lifting up to 100 pounds, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds, and constantly lifting up to 20 pounds.
Visual acuity is necessary for operating machinery, inspecting small components, and performing maintenance tasks.
Preferred Education and Experience
A high school diploma with additional coursework in mechanical or plumbing trades, along with experience in mechanical maintenance, particularly in pump repair, is desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required, with the ability to obtain a commercial driver's license within the first six months of employment. Certification as a Collections System Operator Grade I is also required within twelve months of hire.
Compensation
Salary range is commensurate with experience.
