Job Responsibilities

Sompo International Surety is in search of a Senior Surety Underwriter with 5-7 years of experience in Surety Underwriting. This role will focus on managing a portfolio of commercial business while fostering and maintaining relationships with agencies and brokers within our expanding Surety operations.

Key Duties
  • Underwriting Proficiency: Evaluate submissions and financial criteria to assess risk acceptability in line with established guidelines.
  • Comprehend pricing elements and rating methodologies, utilizing predictive modeling tools for risk pricing based on financial and competitive assessments.
  • Employ all relevant underwriting resources and strategies to ensure adherence to guidelines.
  • Exhibit technical underwriting capabilities through comprehensive account evaluations and meticulous documentation.
  • Analyze information related to adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, and requirements to drive outcomes within the designated territory.
  • Follow CAT guidelines and maintain underwriting discipline to mitigate exposure and ensure appropriate pricing.
  • Stay informed on regional issues, regulations, and trends.

Portfolio Management:
  • Oversee assigned portfolio to meet gross written premium, profitability, retention, product mix, and new business objectives.
  • Effectively allocate time and resources to optimize producer performance.

Marketing & Distribution Management:
  • Build producer relationships to enhance pipeline development and agency insights, driving performance to surpass targets.
  • Craft and execute distributor-specific strategies, monitor outcomes, and adjust plans to ensure a robust pipeline for future growth.
  • Facilitate effective relationship management and client engagement to foster trust, support negotiations, and secure commitments.

Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of surety underwriting practices, techniques, and national/local filing regulations.
  • Familiarity with underwriting processes, coverages, and tools for gathering and evaluating information for renewals and new business.
  • Preferred experience in the energy sector (mining, oil & gas, renewables).
  • Proven ability to cultivate and expand a profitable book of business.
  • Capability to identify customer needs, present tailored solutions, manage objections, and finalize agreements.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of Surety Underwriting experience.
