Job Overview
The Scientific Research Specialist engages in the planning, design, execution, and oversight of research initiatives within a foundational biological and health science laboratory focused on the study of infectious diseases and host immune responses in the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in the development and implementation of study objectives and goals.
  • Designing and conducting intricate laboratory experiments.
  • Executing advanced techniques in molecular biology, cell culture, and microscopy.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting research data.
  • Assisting in the formulation and application of new or revised research methodologies.
  • Testing experimental designs and analytical methods, providing recommendations for their use.
  • Establishing controls, criteria, and research standards.
  • Conducting routine experimental procedures on laboratory animals, including surgical procedures and drug administration.
  • Overseeing the care and maintenance of laboratory animals.
  • Performing critical literature reviews relevant to ongoing research.
  • Assisting in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences.
  • Supporting the principal investigator in preparing proposals for new or renewed funding.
  • Coordinating laboratory activities and assignments for postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and research staff.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Required
A Bachelor's Level Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in biological sciences is required.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant biological or health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is essential; a Master's degree is preferred. A minimum of 1 year of experience is required, with 3-5 years of relevant experience preferred. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to translate, adapt, and apply academic and practical knowledge in biological and health science research. Experience in a biological or health research capacity is required, with a preference for familiarity with molecular biology, cell culture, and microscopy techniques. Experience with animal handling and husbandry is also desired. Successful completion of a background check is required; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.
