BDS operates as a public defense organization dedicated to serving low-income individuals in New York across various legal areas, including criminal, family, immigration, and civil law. Our mission emphasizes addressing the systemic legal challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly Black and Brown populations living in poverty.
Each year, BDS assists thousands of clients with a wide array of intricate legal needs. Beyond providing vigorous legal representation, our multidisciplinary teams, which include attorneys, social workers, and advocates, offer comprehensive support in areas such as housing, public benefits, education, and employment.
The Youth Advocacy Division comprises a collaborative team of attorneys and social workers committed to representing young individuals up to the age of 18 who encounter legal issues. This unit specifically handles cases involving adolescents aged 12-17 in both Supreme and Family Court settings. Team members engage with young clients facing:
- Charges as adults in Supreme Court for clients aged 14-17
- Misdemeanor and felony charges in Family Court for clients aged 12-17
- Cases transitioned from Supreme Court to Family Court
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with fellow supervisors and team members to support attorneys in achieving optimal outcomes for clients, fostering a culture of growth and learning.
- Promote an equitable and inclusive workplace environment.
- Conduct regular meetings with supervisees for case supervision, identifying challenges and providing guidance throughout the legal process.
- Review and provide constructive feedback on written motions and other legal documents produced by supervisees.
- Attend court proceedings to offer support and guidance to team members.
- Mentor attorneys to enhance their skills and professional development.
- Assist attorneys in navigating complex situations involving the Court, ACCs, and DAs, intervening when necessary.
- Evaluate attorney performance through formal and informal assessments, providing timely feedback.
- Facilitate effective collaboration between attorneys and interdisciplinary staff, including social workers and investigators.
- Ensure attorneys meet their case management obligations and adapt to evolving technology.
- Support practice management efforts, including case coverage and administrative tasks.
- Adhere to BDS policies and procedures, including those related to personnel and office operations.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- A minimum of five years of experience in criminal defense or juvenile delinquency practice.
- A strong commitment to client-centered representation.
- Proven ability to train and mentor attorneys, fostering their growth as effective advocates.
- Capacity to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams within the organization.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in case and document management systems.
- A desire to contribute to a management team dedicated to enhancing client representation and the overall effectiveness of the Youth Advocacy Division.
Position Information
This is a salaried, exempt position with a standard schedule of Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. The role is based at BDS's offices, with a requirement for in-person availability to support team members and ensure adequate coverage.
