The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is on the lookout for a dedicated Practical Nursing Specialist to join our team at the Orthopedic Clinic.

Position Overview

  • Operates within the boundaries of the practical nursing license to deliver patient care in accordance with the established care plan set forth by the registered nurse. Responsibilities include conducting technical assessments, administering immunizations, assisting in minor surgical procedures, providing medications and treatments, fitting orthopedic devices, and potentially overseeing clinic programs.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Work under the direct supervision of a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse.
  • Execute technical patient care and associated clerical tasks in an outpatient environment.
  • Utilize electronic data processing tools and standard office equipment as necessary.
  • Deliver patient education concerning diagnoses, medications, and treatments under the guidance of a physician or as per clinic protocols.
  • Apply dressings, evaluate and document wound conditions, remove sutures, ensure proper fitting of orthopedic equipment, and provide treatments following established protocols. Responsible for instructing patients on follow-up care procedures.
  • Initiate basic cardiac life support and assist in emergency situations as required.
  • Ensure timely communication of lab results to the medical staff and facilitate the transfer of medical records as directed.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and patient education materials in examination areas.
  • Conduct physical assessments, which may include vital signs, weight, height, and medical history, while documenting all relevant data, including allergies and current medications.
The new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty Campus is set to open soon, featuring a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to comprehensive orthopedic care, including outpatient, inpatient, and surgical services. This facility will also host a full-service community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, retail pharmacy, and emergency department, along with various support services. Designed to enhance both patient and staff experiences, this campus aims to excel in patient care, education, and research while fostering community partnerships.

The Department of Nursing has been recognized with Magnet status on four occasions, reflecting our unwavering commitment to excellence in all areas of our healthcare services.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, with no weekends or holidays. Occasional late shifts and on-call duties may be required. Shifts range from 8 to 10 hours with flexible start times.
Compensation: $20.92 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Location: North Liberty Campus

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must hold a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with the Iowa Board of Nursing or be eligible for a temporary work permit. Must complete required continuing education to maintain LPN certification.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Experience in Public Contact/Customer Service.
