Role Overview

Surgical Technologists (STs) play a vital role in the preparation and care of surgical patients. As an ST at Duke Health, you'll work under the general direction of a professional nurse to assist in the operating room and ambulatory settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain a sterile field and ensure the team maintains a sterile environment.
  • Prepare operating rooms with appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts in a safe and accurate manner.
  • Assist with patient preparation, examination, and procedures in the surgical clinic setting.
  • Collect and label laboratory specimens for processing.
  • Reinforce postoperative instructions under the direction of a physician or RN.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • A graduate degree from an accredited Surgical Technology program or successful completion of the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification exam.
  • 0-18 months of full-time equivalent Surgical Technology experience for Level I, or 6-12 months of experience for Level II.
