Position Summary:

The Forensic Pathology Associate is responsible for conducting medicolegal death investigations in accordance with relevant legal statutes, which includes performing thorough external examinations and autopsies, as well as the meticulous collection of evidence. This role also involves providing expert testimony in court regarding findings from death investigations and evidence gathered from deceased individuals. Additionally, the Associate will play a crucial role in educating trainees, including forensic pathology fellows, medical residents, and students, on various facets of medicolegal death investigations.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive medicolegal death investigations, including autopsies and external examinations, while collecting essential histologic, toxicologic, and physical evidence.
  • Analyze and interpret both gross and microscopic pathology, along with toxicologic results, while reviewing medical records and police reports to compile detailed autopsy reports and timely death certificates.
  • Provide expert testimony in civil and criminal court cases related to death investigations, preparing for such testimony through participation in depositions and pretrial meetings with legal representatives.
  • Engage in continuous quality assurance and improvement initiatives within the Pathology Division, attending case assignment and review conferences regularly.
  • Contribute to the educational mission of the Department by mentoring forensic pathology fellows and supervising medical residents, offering guidance and instruction in autopsy procedures.
  • Participate in the administrative functions of the medical examiner's office, including attending meetings and assisting in the development of standard operating procedures.

Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
  • Must hold a valid medical license in Texas upon employment.
  • Certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology is required at the time of employment.
  • Certification in forensic pathology must be obtained within two years of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License and the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Additional Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening.

Skills and Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of forensic pathology and general anatomic pathology, along with a solid understanding of various medical and surgical specialties.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with diverse audiences, including families of decedents, and to provide clear and empathetic consultations.
  • Ability to articulate complex analytical conclusions and medical decisions in challenging situations.
  • Strong time management capabilities, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office.

Work Environment:

The position involves working in a morgue and office setting, with routine exposure to deceased individuals resulting from various causes, including violence and natural diseases. The role requires handling biohazardous materials and exposure to unpleasant odors.


Physical Demands:

This role necessitates medium physical work, including the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 20 pounds frequently. The Associate must be capable of standing for extended periods and wearing personal protective equipment for prolonged durations during examinations.
