Job Title: Documentation and Coding Consultant

At Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, we are seeking a skilled Documentation and Coding Consultant to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of our medical records and coding practices.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with clinical sections, including providers, support staff, and leadership.
  • Perform audits and provide feedback and education in accordance with department and Corporate Integrity protocols.
  • Conduct annual professional services reviews for each provider in assigned clinical sections, creating and delivering education/feedback based on review results.
  • Plan, write, develop, and conduct ongoing training regarding professional services and risk adjustment revenue and reimbursement.
  • Interpret changes in the external regulatory environment and modify Virginia Mason policies accordingly.
  • Act as a liaison between physicians, administrative staff, patient financial services, coding staff, and ancillary staff to resolve issues involving coding, billing, and documentation requirements and procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries relating to CPT and diagnosis coding, developing and keeping current all coding tools.
  • Oversee medical record documentation to ensure accuracy, monitor electronic record regulations, and provide support as necessary.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, plus credentialed as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCS-P).
  • One year of CPT and diagnosis coding experience in a healthcare provider or third-party payer.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with ability to interact tactfully yet assertively with physicians and other professional staff.
  • Strong presentation skills and comfort in settings ranging from one-on-one communications to large groups.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five years of CPT and diagnosis coding experience in a healthcare provider or third-party payer.
  • Three years of experience as an instructor/trainer.
  • Clinical knowledge and exposure to risk adjustment coding.
  • Experience with Radiation Oncology coding.
