Overview of the Role

MedStar Medical Group is seeking a dedicated Float Medical Assistant to support our urgent care facilities. The successful candidate will possess certification as a Medical Assistant and demonstrate exceptional skills in customer service and patient engagement.

The Float Medical Assistant will undertake both clinical and administrative responsibilities within an outpatient care environment, working under the guidance of a physician or registered nurse. Responsibilities may encompass tasks such as blood draws, administering medications and vaccines, monitoring and recording vital signs, and assisting healthcare providers during patient examinations, along with providing clerical support.

This role requires flexibility to operate across various practice locations, addressing staffing needs and patient demand as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist healthcare providers with patient readiness, clinical procedures, examinations, and patient education. Collaborate with the clinical team to manage patient flow effectively. Prepare for upcoming patient appointments by reviewing and organizing necessary information. Evaluate patients for preventive care requirements, ongoing support, and any barriers to care, including safety and fall risk assessments. Conduct follow-up for transitions of care and urgent needs, while also engaging in motivational interviewing for disease management and community resource needs.
  • Identify and report any actual or potential issues concerning patients and their families. Engage in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing care standards and safety. Participate in mandatory training related to safety and infection control. Ensure compliance through regular audits of temperature logs, medication inventory, and emergency equipment maintenance. Participate in managing patient populations by promoting self-management support and health goal setting.
  • Conduct specific patient and laboratory tests, including the removal of sutures and staples. Accurately document all activities in the electronic medical record (EMR). Follow up with patients regarding essential screenings such as pap smears, lead levels, HIV tests, mammograms, and STDs. Collect and process laboratory specimens, ensuring all documentation is complete.
  • Provide assistance during patient discharge and offer chaperoning services. Fulfill responsibilities related to infection prevention and environmental safety as assigned. Maintain records of equipment maintenance and manage inventory of medical supplies. Conduct telephone screenings to gather patient information and determine appropriate next steps according to established protocols. May perform intravenous catheter insertions for fluid therapy or medication administration, as well as urinary catheter management for procedures.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists within one year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience in an outpatient medical office setting or equivalent is preferred.
  • Completion of an externship in a medical or outpatient health environment is strongly preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • Externship completion at MedStar Health may substitute for experience in an outpatient medical office.
  • For roles in Cardiology, six months of experience in an outpatient medical office or a related degree in exercise physiology/science is preferred.
