Role Overview

As a Senior Legal Strategist at American Express, you will play a critical role in shaping the company's legal strategy and driving business growth. You will be responsible for managing a dynamic portfolio of individual consumer and commercial litigation, developing and implementing specific litigation strategies, and leading a diverse and talented team of attorneys and paralegals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a dynamic portfolio of individual consumer and commercial litigation to achieve Company's risk and mitigation goals
  • Develop and implement specific litigation strategies for internal litigation portfolio, including analysis of disputes, early case assessments, negotiation, and development of appropriate case resolutions
  • Lead and mentor a diverse and talented team of attorneys and paralegals to accomplish Company's risk and mitigation goals and create growth and learning opportunities for team members
  • Build efficiencies and impactful strategies across internal litigation portfolio
  • Provide litigation root-cause analyses and mitigation strategies, undertake analysis of litigation-related issues, and provide litigation risk mitigation training and advice to business lawyers and clients
  • Develop and provide clear reporting and metrics regularly to leadership concerning internal litigation portfolio

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and J.D.
  • Qualified to practice law in relevant jurisdiction
  • 8 years in general litigation practice, with experience in commercial and consumer finance litigation and trials
  • Demonstrated experience in leading others, both through direct relationships and/or indirectly

  • Knowledge of the legal field and its intersection with business
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to generate creative and innovative solutions to client issues and in litigation
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format
  • Ability to work efficiently through large volume, fast-paced litigation portfolio
  • Ability to build relationships and partner with others to drive results
  • Capacity to be agile and pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances
