Job Summary:

The Surgical Physician Assistant at Montefiore Medical Center will provide medical services within the education, training, and experience of the PA, as delegated by the supervising physician. This role will involve obtaining patient histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, formulating a diagnosis, developing and implementing a treatment plan, monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, assisting in surgical procedures, offering counseling and education to meet patient needs, and making appropriate referrals.

Responsibilities:

  • Prescribes medications for the patient.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the health care team and the patient and involved others.
  • Participates in a team approach to health care, acts as a liaison between members of the primary care team.
  • Performs emergency, lifesaving procedures in the presence of life-threatening situations such as cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhage or similar problems. Technical skills include but are not limited to, providing basic life support and advanced life support.
  • In collaboration with the Attending Physician/health care providers, the PA will coordinate the care of the patient.
  • Performs procedures that may include insertion and removal of arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, Swann-Ganz catheters, intra-aortic balloons, temporary pacemaker wires, renal dialysis catheters, thoracentesis, paracentesis, arthrocentesis, and lumbar puncture. In addition, performs venipuncture and arteriopuncture.
  • May assist the Orthopaedic Surgeons in the OR, for both inpatient and ambulatory cases.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited Physician's Assistant program.
  • Registered as a Physician's Assistant in New York State.
  • NCCPA certified.
  • Automated medical information systems.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to administer medications to meet age and weight criteria of patient for pediatrics, adult, and geriatric age groups.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of physiological and psychological patient differences in age-related groups.
