Job Description:

The House Supervisor is responsible for overseeing hospital activities and coordinating between patient care areas and other departments to deliver safe and effective patient care for a specific shift.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintains competency to deliver patient care to diverse patient populations, adhering to the RN position description.
  • Embraces technology, demonstrating proficiency in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and utilizing it to enhance efficiency and quality decision-making.
  • Facilitates patient flow throughout the acute care continuum, removing barriers related to transitions in care.
  • Oversees nursing unit staffing, proactively managing gaps in nursing division coverage and developing a 24-hour staffing plan.
  • Strives to optimize productivity and acuity-balanced assignments.
  • Serves as a resource to the nursing division, providing knowledge of federal, state, regulatory, policy, procedure, and practice standards.
  • Ensures availability of supplies, equipment, medications, and other resources to promote safe and quality patient care.
  • Strives to ensure exceptional service excellence for patients and families, role-modeling exceptional service behaviors and seeking to positively resolve patient and/or family issues.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to nursing division associates to promote professional growth, focusing on nurses new to practice to facilitate a successful transition to practice.
  • Promotes workplace safety in collaboration with leadership and security.
  • Contributes to healthy work environments by role-modeling and promoting a culture of safety, leading with transparency and authenticity.
  • Encourages collaboration across hospital departments and among professionals to ensure safe and quality patient care, promoting effective communication.
  • Leads with cultural competence.
  • Embraces the organization's strategic objectives and related initiatives, demonstrating alignment with department and unit leadership and promoting initiatives and facilitating department/unit engagement in the work.
  • Demonstrates understanding of Emergency Management principles and the hospital Emergency Operations Plan, providing leadership in the event of a crisis.
  • Promotes safe and quality patient care, facilitating the escalation and investigation of patient, family, or associate events, using Just Culture principles in event investigation.
  • Responds to urgent or emergent patient care situations, demonstrating the ability to rapidly assess and intervene to support the care team when necessary.
  • Utilizes the Nurse Practice Act, Scope and Standards of Practice, and Code of Ethics to role-model professional nursing behaviors and practice, serving as a resource providing interpretation of nursing practice standards for all healthcare team members.
  • Seeks growth opportunities to maintain clinical and leadership competence.
  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health.
Requirements:
  • BSN or completion of BSN within 4 years of hire
  • Current RN license in the state of practice or Compact license
  • BLS certification
  • ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire
  • FEMA training ICS 100 and ICS 200, Emergency Notification System training, and EMR training within 12 months of hire
  • Minimum 3 years current RN clinical experience, including management of critical and complex patients, and leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MSN
  • Additional ICS courses 402, 300, 700/800
  • PALS certification
  • National certification in the area of practice
Work Environment:

This position requires regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts. Ability to work nights and/or weekends is required for identified positions. Be available to work overtime, if needed. Be willing to accept supervision and work well with others. Demonstrates a willingness to learn. Be able to communicate clearly. Complies with all applicable hospital policies and procedures, including infection control and facility safety in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of information management as appropriate.

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencies. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.). May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
