Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Instrument Room Lead Technician, the Sterilization Specialist is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, sorting, tray assembly, and sterilization of medical instruments. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities and Requirements:

Essential Functions:

  1. Recognize needs and initiate appropriate action in regard to maintaining supplies and equipment.
  2. Decontaminate instruments using approved methods and protocols.
  3. Sort and clean instruments, ensuring they are free from debris and contamination.
  4. Assemble trays and packs according to instrument lists and protocols.
  5. Inspect instruments for defects or damage.
  6. Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and sterilizers.
  7. Monitor and maintain inventory levels of instruments and supplies.
  8. Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities.

Work Environment:

The Sterilization Specialist will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a high level of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials. The successful candidate will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established protocols for handling and processing instruments.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) preferred.
  • 1 year of experience in a hospital or healthcare setting, preferably in a Sterile Processing department.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and push/pull 100+ pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with sterilization equipment and processes.
  • Knowledge of infection control and prevention principles.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
