Job Summary

West Virginia University is seeking a skilled Trades Specialist I to maintain the interior and exterior appearance of our institutional buildings and grounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including lubrications, calibrations, and adjustments to mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Conduct regular reviews and upgrades of control systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Check and maintain all indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures.
  • Respond to building maintenance requests, diagnosing and repairing various equipment as needed.
  • Perform plumbing-related repairs and maintenance, including faucet repairs, drain cleaning, and leak detection.
  • Operate as a first responder to odors, leaks, electrical failures, and plumbing-related failures.
  • Perform general painting duties, including painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture.
  • Clean and maintain the interior appearance of all buildings, including classrooms, offices, laboratories, and public areas.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms and kitchenettes, including walls, floors, and fixtures.
  • Clean and maintain the surrounding exterior appearance of all institutional buildings, including raking, removing, and disposing of leaves and debris.
  • Operate, service, and maintain all grounds equipment, including trucks, tractors, and riding mowers.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years of experience in general trades building maintenance, or completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or a related field.
  • Knowledge of building trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other craft trades.
  • Ability to read blueprints and operate a computer.
  • Ability to follow OSHA guidelines and associated codes.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to rapidly learn all policies and procedures impacting the affected area.
  • Ability to organize work flow to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ability to operate a state vehicle.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to follow safety requirements and use proper safety equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks, including changing filters, replacing light bulbs, and cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Ability to follow specific directions on a general task.
  • Ability to use chemicals, including penetrating oil, glue, coil cleaner, paints, thinners, and lubricants.
  • Ability to handle/install insulating and filtration materials.
  • Ability to assist higher-level trades technicians in facility repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate power tools, including saws, drills, and jackhammers.
  • Ability to perform housekeeping duties on the job site and in the shop.
  • Ability to clean and maintain tools.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to lift materials over 75 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, walk, crawl, etc.
  • Ability to work in a lift 30 feet off the ground.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to erect and work from scaffold, ladders, and man lifts.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including digging a ditch, cleaning utility tunnels, pulling electrical cable, moving heavy equipment, shoveling snow, and transporting and installing materials.
