The University of Maryland Medical System is a leading healthcare provider with a strong commitment to academic and community services. As a Laboratory Support Technician, you will play a vital role in our team, working part time nights to ensure the smooth operation of our laboratory services.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of our experienced laboratory staff, you will be responsible for collecting blood samples from patients, processing specimens, and maintaining accurate records. Your attention to detail and ability to work independently will be essential in this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect venous and capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
  • Utilize a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information.
  • Properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, and storage.
  • Perform accurate and complete order entry and perform order checking of requisitions for proper data entry.
  • May operate simple medical laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge and microscope.
  • Effectively communicate with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens.
  • Monitor pending work and resolve specimen issues as needed.
  • Sort laboratory reports and distribute them to appropriate mailboxes.
  • Perform inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy is preferred. Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.

Experience: Minimum of one year of work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred. Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
