Behavioral Support Specialist for Young Children

Northern Virginia Family Service is seeking a highly skilled Behavioral Support Specialist for Young Children to join our Early Childhood Education team. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral development of young children within early childhood education settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Behavior Assessment and Intervention: Conduct observations and assessments of children exhibiting challenging behaviors, develop and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) in collaboration with teachers, families, and other professionals, and use evidence-based practices to address a range of behavioral and emotional issues.
  • Support to Staff and Clients: Provide coaching, modeling, and training to teachers and staff on behavior management techniques, positive reinforcement, and classroom strategies, collaborate with families to support children's behavioral needs at home and in school settings, and develop resources and materials for parents and staff to support children's social-emotional development.
  • Collaboration and Consultation: Work closely with teachers, center managers, coordinators, mental health consultants, and other partners to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment, participate in team meetings, child/family staffing, and IEP meetings to discuss children's progress and adjust intervention plans as needed.
  • Training and Professional Development: Design and deliver professional development workshops and training sessions for staff on topics related to behavior management, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed care, and keep abreast of current research and best practices in early childhood behavior management.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of assessments, interventions, and outcomes for individual children, use data to evaluate the effectiveness of behavior interventions and modify approaches as needed, and prepare reports for program leadership and, when necessary, for external agencies.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Social Work, Child Development, or a related field.
  • A Master's degree or certification as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with young children in early childhood settings, particularly with behavior management.
  • Strong understanding of child development, behavior management strategies, and early intervention techniques.
  • Experience with positive behavior support, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based intervention strategies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and adapt interventions to meet individual needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in usage of basic technological tools including laptops/computers, email, phones, and internet; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
