Administrative Fellowship Program for Healthcare Management

Chicago Illinois, United States Northwestern Memorial Healthcare Full time
Position Overview

The Administrative Fellowship Program is a comprehensive 2-year, fellow-directed initiative designed to offer a customizable experience that aligns with the fellow's specific interests and professional aspirations.

This fellowship is centered around project-based assignments, where fellows utilize their networking capabilities to identify suitable project opportunities. The focus areas and availability of projects are contingent upon the current objectives of the organization and its departments.

A full-time management position within Northwestern Memorial Healthcare may become available at any point during the fellowship, particularly in the first or early second year, providing the fellow with the freedom to pursue these roles.

Each fellow will be paired with a VP and Director Mentor, selected based on the fellow's career objectives and interests. These mentors play a crucial role in guiding the fellow through project selection and professional development.

The frequency of meetings between the fellow and their mentors is flexible, ranging from weekly to monthly, depending on the fellow's preferences.

Additionally, the fellow will engage in monthly discussions with the Executive Sponsor and Fellowship Manager, as well as opportunities to interact with leaders across various levels of the organization.

During the initial phase of the fellowship, the fellow will spend time understanding the diverse range of hospital and system departments through shadowing and informational interviews.

Following this orientation, the fellow will participate in projects across different departments, determined by both personal interests and institutional needs.

Projects are typically aligned with current organizational priorities, including but not limited to business development, strategic planning, hospital operations, and community service.

Examples of previous fellowship projects include:

- Enhancing Radiology Turnaround Time in the Emergency Department
- Increasing On-Time Starts in the Operating Rooms
- Conducting Current State Analysis of Procedure Suite Utilization
- Improving the Patient Journey for Breast Cancer
- Expanding Access to Diagnostic Imaging Services
- Reducing Agency Staffing Costs
- Growth and Expansion Modeling with the Strategy Team
- Implementing Ambient Listening Technology and Training
- Designing Community Spaces for New Outpatient Facilities
- Establishing a Centralized Wheelchair Program
- Acting as interim practice manager for an outpatient clinic

Moreover, the fellow will partake in a 9-month process improvement training course, Improvement Leadership Training (ILT), and will lead a process improvement project that may or may not relate to their previous work experience.

The fellow has the opportunity to broaden their professional exposure by engaging with Northwestern Medicine's extensive network of healthcare facilities.

This diverse health network enables the fellow to gain valuable insights into both Academic Medical Centers and community hospital settings.

Upon completion of the fellowship, it is anticipated that the fellow will have significantly expanded their professional network and acquired a deep understanding of hospital operations and health system dynamics beyond the flagship hospital.

This extensive exposure, combined with substantial project involvement and an expanded professional network, equips fellows for a seamless transition into managerial roles within Northwestern Memorial Healthcare.
