Job Overview

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The role involves executing routine and skilled manual tasks as directed. The individual will support operations, maintenance, and skilled trades personnel as necessary. Overtime may be required during extended workdays and emergency situations, along with regular on-call rotations.

SUPERVISION:

Works under the general oversight of a foreman or supervisor.

SUPERVISION GIVEN:

None.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts tasks that necessitate specialized skills in the maintenance and operation of equipment, including pickup trucks, pump trucks, tractors, mowers, pumps, generators, pneumatic tools, cement mixers, air compressors, and snow removal machinery.
  • Engages in manual tasks that require specialized knowledge to assist skilled tradespeople in construction, maintenance, and repair work, including minor adjustments and repairs of equipment.
  • Performs various manual duties related to valve operations, pipeline construction, and maintenance, such as cleaning culverts and drains, digging trenches, spreading asphalt, caulking lead joints, and aiding in valve installations and repairs.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment by fueling and greasing trucks, automobiles, and other grounds maintenance machinery.
  • Participates in building and grounds maintenance tasks, including grass cutting, snow shoveling, fence repairs, trash disposal, and general cleanliness of facilities.
  • Assists higher-grade personnel in all aspects of plant maintenance and repairs, including but not limited to diesel engine overhauls, pump repairs, and concrete structure construction.
  • Supports the repair of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Contributes to the upkeep and cleaning of MWRA equipment, structures, and facilities.
  • Assists in the handling and storage of materials, including loading, unloading, moving, and transporting supplies.
  • Collaborates as part of a multi-crew team as required.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Performs related responsibilities as necessary.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with common tools, construction, and sewer maintenance equipment, and knowledge of one or more mechanical or building trades.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles and equipment, including light trucks, ten-wheel dump trucks, snow plows, and power-driven grounds maintenance tools.
  • Capability to perform semi-skilled manual labor and make minor repairs to small tools and simple mechanical equipment.
  • Basic understanding of facility operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must hold a current valid Class B Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License.
  • Subject to MWRA's Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing Policy and random drug-testing program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Motor vehicles, power and hand tools, mobile radios, telephones, and beepers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations.

Occasionally, the employee works in precarious locations and may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical hazards.

The noise level in the work environment is typically very loud in field settings and moderately loud in other locations.
