Position Summary

The Neurophysiological Monitoring Specialist plays a crucial role in safeguarding patients by continuously assessing the central nervous system during surgical interventions. This position is integral to the operating room team, offering expertise in SSEP, EMG, ABR, and various monitoring techniques for ENT, spinal, and cardiovascular surgeries. Collaboration with medical professionals is essential, as the specialist will regularly evaluate and interpret the patient's nervous system responses, ensuring effective communication of any significant changes to the surgical team to mitigate the risk of neurological complications. This role demands strong troubleshooting skills, effective communication, excellent customer service, and critical thinking abilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preoperative Duties:
    • Analyze planned surgical procedures and monitoring orders to identify at-risk structures based on patient history and requested monitoring.
    • Coordinate necessary adjustments in monitoring while adhering to patient confidentiality protocols.
    • Engage with relevant departments to facilitate patient access and scheduling in compliance with facility policies.
    • Prepare all equipment and supplies required for patient monitoring according to established procedures.
    • Confirm patient identity and communicate the monitoring strategy to patients and their families in an understandable manner.
    • Accurately mark recording and stimulation sites and apply electrodes following facility guidelines.

Intraoperative Duties:

  • Set up monitoring equipment in the operating room to ensure patient electrical safety.
  • Maintain open communication with the surgical team, including anesthesia providers and nursing staff, in accordance with facility protocols.
  • Collaborate with the anesthesia team and surgeon to optimize monitoring outcomes.
  • Review baseline recordings with the surgeon as per facility procedures.
  • Implement necessary adjustments in monitoring based on real-time observations.
  • Continuously monitor neurophysiological function throughout the procedure, communicating with the surgical team as needed.
  • Identify and respond to clinically significant events, following established protocols for critical results.
  • Document all relevant communications, physiological status, and adjustments in the surgery log during the monitoring process.
  • Safely discontinue monitoring and remove electrodes, ensuring sites are checked for pre-monitoring status.

Postoperative Duties:

  • Provide detailed reports and analyses of findings in accordance with facility procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect monitoring equipment and electrodes following established protocols.
  • Restock necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare and print required documentation, including waveforms and monitoring reports for interpretation.
  • Submit charges and logs in compliance with facility policies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent walking and standing.
  • Ability to reach above and below shoulder height.
  • Frequent kneeling, crawling, and bending.
  • Capability to push and pull weights exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Ability to carry or push weights under 50 pounds.
  • Continuous repetitive movements and the ability to concentrate for extended periods under stress.

Education and Certification:

  • Must meet at least one of the four pathways to certification by ABRET.
  • BLS Certification is required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

  • Salary range: $56,000-$100,000 based on experience.
  • Sign-On Bonus: $5,000 relocation assistance available.
