Job Overview

The role entails operating a substantial roll-off container vehicle to facilitate recycling collection routes and manage the emptying of roll-off containers at the landfill.

Safety Notice: This position is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to a comprehensive drug testing policy, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident testing for prohibited substances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive a truck along designated routes to empty recycling containers and deposit materials in appropriate locations.
  • Adhere to safe operating practices, being mindful of overhead utilities, gas meters, and fellow employees.
  • Perform maintenance tasks such as mowing grass and litter collection to keep landfill property clean and orderly.
  • Utilize tools including shovels, pitchforks, rakes, and small power equipment like saws and mowers.
  • Operate tractors with attachments, including mowers and loaders, as well as other heavy machinery as required.
  • Maintain and service city vehicles and equipment, assisting with minor repairs and reporting major issues to the Shop Division.
  • Occasionally assist with oil changes and tire repairs on landfill vehicles.
  • Engage in manual tasks associated with the Landfill Division and Public Works Department.
  • Provide immediate written and verbal reports on property damage and accidents to the Superintendent.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Landfill Superintendent or their assistant.
  • Utilize city-provided safety equipment in accordance with the City of Clovis Safety Manual.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • No specific educational background is necessary.
  • At least one year of experience operating large commercial trucks or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the maintenance and operation of large trucks, heavy machinery, and various hand and power tools.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License with necessary endorsements.
  • Landfill Operator certification or the ability to obtain it within one year.
  • Preferred: Landfill Manager Certification, HAZWHOPER Certification, Compost Certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Departmental rules, regulations, and contingency plans.
Skills in:
  • Safe operation of heavy machinery and hand tools.
Ability to:
  • Follow instructions, manage cell development, and operate basic office equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking on uneven surfaces, balancing, bending, and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions
  • Regular attendance is crucial for service continuity.
  • This position is subject to drug testing in compliance with applicable regulations and city policies.
  • Essential duties are primarily performed outdoors, exposing the employee to various weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, along with travel between sites.
  • Use of safety gear is mandatory.
