POSITION SUMMARY:

This role is focused on the preparation, execution, and completion of various tasks typically associated with the Train Control Department across locations integral to the operation of the Niagara Frontier Transit Authority's rail network.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following responsibilities are indicative of the tasks performed within this role. They may not describe every specific position but represent the essential functions of the classification.


  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively executing assignments from the Supervisor.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles, methods, and procedures relevant to the maintenance and repair of: Phase Selective track circuits, Digital Transmission Systems, Real-Time Computer Control and Monitoring Systems, Switch Machines, Wayside Signal Systems, Audio Track Circuit Systems, Carborne Control Systems, and vehicle-to-Wayside Transmission Systems.
  • Proficiency in utilizing advanced testing equipment, including but not limited to Oscilloscopes, Digital Multi-Meters, Frequency Meters, Deviation Meters, Digital Probes, Semiconductor and Logic Test Devices, and specialized diagnostic tools.
  • Undertake additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated proficiency in interpreting cable diagrams, wiring schematics, logic circuits, and schematics is essential. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. The ability to foster productive working relationships with supervisors and colleagues is crucial. A satisfactory prior work record is expected.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position involves the intermittent performance of physically demanding tasks, which may include bending, squatting, reaching, kneeling, climbing, twisting, and crawling (under rail cars). The role may also require lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling materials and equipment weighing between 5-50 pounds. The job entails standing for up to three hours at a time for a total of four hours per day, sitting for one hour daily, and walking for one hour at a time for two hours per day.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Approximately 60% of the time is spent indoors, while 40% is outdoors, exposing employees to natural environmental conditions. The work environment may involve exposure to fumes, dust, gases, odors, and mist, as well as noise, vibration, and potential hazards (slip and fall, chemicals) from motorized vehicles.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must possess at least one year of formal training in basic electrical/electronic theory, including digital logic, analog logic, integrated circuitry, and CRT circuitry, along with three years of experience in industrial/commercial maintenance, specifically in troubleshooting and repairing modern Electrical/Electronic systems. All candidates must successfully complete the designated Skills test for the position. A valid driver's license of the appropriate classification is required, along with the ability to pass certification for operating rail vehicles. Candidates must be able to wear and utilize all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and participate in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program.
