Employment Status: Full-time
Classification: Non-Exempt
Summary: The primary duty of the Law Enforcement Officer is to safeguard and serve the community and the Park District. This role requires adherence to directives from superior officers and collaboration with fellow officers in executing responsibilities. This position is appropriate for transitional duty.
Key Responsibilities:
- Law Enforcement Duties:
- Conduct foot and vehicle patrols to ensure compliance with laws, policies, and safety protocols.
- Prepare regular reports on various topics, including DUI incidents, confiscated driver's licenses, arrests, and towed vehicles.
- Maintain comprehensive records of activities.
- Process and collect evidence while preserving the integrity of the evidence holding area.
- Assist supervisory personnel in comprehensive criminal investigations as required.
- Act as a liaison with local safety forces, including Police, Fire, and Emergency services.
- Provide support for special events, including parking management, event security, and emergency medical services.
- Secure crime scenes and restrict public access to potential hazards.
- Assist with wildlife programs as necessary.
- Attend court proceedings and provide testimony as required.
- Protect the property and natural resources of the Park District.
- Provide information to the public.
- Deter crime and enforce Park District rules, regulations, and applicable state laws.
- Maintain a positive public image at all times.
- Departmental Responsibilities:
- Provide support within the department as needed.
- Collaborate with management to develop and implement short-term and long-term departmental goals.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to operate effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment using sound judgment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with diverse individuals.
- Exhibit courtesy and tact while managing temper.
- Ability to identify issues and gather information to resolve problems logically.
- Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills across various disciplines.
- Maintain confidentiality as necessary.
- Proficient negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Knowledge of current industry practices, trends, techniques, laws, and regulations related to law enforcement.
- Ability to enforce Park District policies, rules, regulations, and state laws.
Education and Experience:
- Certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Ohio; Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
- Prior experience in law enforcement preferred.
- Valid Ohio Driver's License required.
- Minimum age of 21 years.
- Must meet and maintain proficiency in all areas of weapons use as per departmental policy.
- Must have a reputable character, free from disqualifying criminal convictions.
- Proven positive working relationships with peers and supervisors, with a record of favorable performance reviews.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to traverse various terrains and access all properties under the Park District's control under diverse conditions.
- Physical fitness to perform daily duties as a field officer.
- Ability to stand, sit, bend, kneel, or stoop for extended periods.
- Physical agility to perform duties, including running and apprehending suspects.
- Good vision and hearing capabilities.
- Dexterity in hands and fingers.
- Able to travel by various means of transportation.
- Ability to lift over 100 pounds.
Job Availability:
The Law Enforcement Officer must be available as situations arise, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or other non-standard hours. Work hours may regularly exceed 40 hours per week.
