Job Summary:

The Surgical Technologist II plays a vital role in the operating room at Rush University, assisting in patient care and surgical services under the supervision of a registered nurse. This position requires a strong understanding of aseptic technique, instrumentation, and equipment management.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply correct principles of aseptic technique to maintain a sterile environment.
  • Establish and protect the integrity of the sterile field and back table at all times.
  • Recognize breaks in technique by self and others, taking corrective action and reporting events to the RN in room.
  • Handle and secure instruments, cords, and draping materials using aseptic technique.
  • Apply correct techniques of disinfection and antisepsis.
  • Prepare instrumentation and equipment for decontamination per established protocol.
  • Demonstrate advanced operating room technical skills, prioritizing scrub activities based on surgical procedure type and team member needs.
  • Participate in routine cases with minimal direction, using preference cards and guidelines.
  • Update cards as needed and obtain necessary equipment specific to the surgical procedure.
  • Assist in opening sterile supplies and apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to individualize setup for surgical procedures.
  • Self-direct coordination of scrub activities for complex surgical procedures.
  • Care for and handle surgical instruments and equipment according to Operating Room protocols.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity in handling instruments and equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for proper functioning of equipment and maintenance of equipment in the room as delegated by the RN.
  • Identify specialty instruments by type, function, and name.
  • Account for sponges, needles, instruments, and other miscellaneous counted items according to Operating Room policies and procedures.
  • Notify the surgical team of any sponge, needle, instrument, or miscellaneous count that is incorrect.
  • Use repeat back communications and key words for safety concerns.
  • Maintain an orderly sterile field, Mayo stand, and back table throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of progressive steps in multiple surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and communicate variation in surgical procedure to the RN.
  • Anticipate emergent circumstances and communicate the information to the RN.
  • DON personal protective equipment according to policy and procedure.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste appropriately.
  • Actively participate in maintaining each patient's dignity and safety at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to assure patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assist in transferring the patient to and from the OR table to the transport cart.
  • Function in an efficient manner at all times.
  • Open and utilize supplies and equipment judiciously.
  • Restock rooms according to established par stock lists.
  • Demonstrate consideration and cooperation within the operating room.
  • Consistently exhibit professional interactions with managers, co-workers, physicians, and all other operating room personnel.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by accepting routine and non-routine assignments.
  • Offer ideas for clinical/system improvements to the charge nurse or unit director.
  • Participate actively in unit/area meetings.
  • Notify the schedule board coordinator or designee when assignments are completed and when leaving the operating room during work hours.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making at all times.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of accredited ORT Program.
  • One or more years of clinical experience or current certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists.
  • Analytic ability.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills utilizing repeat back strategies for patient safety and teaching.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with others in difficult situations.
  • Flexibility with schedule to accommodate staffing needs.
  • Organizational skills for timely processes.
  • Ability to document using electronic medical record systems, to check documents for errors, and use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data.
