The City of Milpitas is seeking a dedicated Senior Fleet Maintenance Technician. This role presents an excellent opportunity to advance your career in fleet maintenance within a supportive organization that positively influences the community.
This position entails overseeing the scheduling and coordination of fleet maintenance operations, including performing routine servicing and repairs on emergency vehicles and various equipment as required.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will possess a minimum of three years of journey-level experience as a mechanic, with a focus on the repair and maintenance of trucks, heavy machinery, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems. A valid California Driver's License and the ability to obtain a Class A license with Tanker and Passenger endorsements are essential within the first months of employment.
Strong organizational skills are crucial for effectively managing fleet maintenance activities. Experience in customer service and leadership is also necessary for this supervisory role. Excellent oral and written communication skills are highly valued.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate and schedule maintenance activities for vehicles and equipment.
- Conduct initial inspections and diagnose mechanical issues.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and assess the feasibility of major repairs.
- Determine whether to outsource work or manage it in-house; oversee external contracts.
- Maintain accurate records of time, materials, and equipment usage; manage inventory and order supplies.
- Ensure compliance with safety practices among shop personnel.
- Inspect new equipment to verify operational readiness.
Additional Duties for Fire Department Assignments
When assigned to the Fire Department, responsibilities include:
- Manage the preventive maintenance program for fire apparatus and equipment.
- Perform routine servicing and repairs on fire vehicles as necessary.
- Execute related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in automotive and truck mechanics.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions relevant to the trade.
- Operation principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
- Welding methods and metal fabrication techniques.
- Preventive maintenance strategies.
- Basic record-keeping and inventory management.
- Principles of centrifugal pumps and related systems used in fire apparatus.
Ability to:
- Plan, organize, and delegate tasks to other shop personnel.
- Maintain comprehensive records and reports.
- Foster effective working relationships with city staff.
- Diagnose and repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform mechanical repairs of varying complexity.
- Utilize various power and hand tools safely and effectively.
Experience and Education
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path would include:
Experience:
- Three years of responsible experience as a journey-level mechanic, focusing on the repair and maintenance of trucks, heavy equipment, diesel engines, and hydraulics; or three years of experience comparable to that of Fleet Maintenance Worker II in the City of Milpitas.
Licenses and Certifications
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Driver's License; Class A with Tanker and Passenger endorsements within the first months of employment.
Supplemental Information
Supervision
Receives general supervision from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor and direction from the Battalion Chief when assigned to the Fire Department. Indirect supervision may be exercised over maintenance staff or fire personnel assisting in tasks.
Physical Requirements
Essential duties require physical capabilities and a work environment that includes:
- Visual acuity to discern colors.
- Auditory ability to hear sounds at 100-decibel levels.
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, crawl, bend, and stoop as needed.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull weights up to 75 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 90 pounds.
- Exposure to outdoor elements, confined spaces, hazardous materials, and varying weather conditions.
